FBI investigates surge in impersonation scams targeting South Florida residents

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Scammers posing as federal agents are swindling South Florida residents out of millions, and the FBI is sounding the alarm.

According to the FBI Miami Field Office on Tuesday, the call scam has been increasing in frequency and affecting residents of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties.

The caller typically uses a service to alter their voice, uses fake phone number IDs to appear legitimate, identifies themselves as federal law enforcement, and instructs victims to wire or send “settlement” funds to assist with an investigation against a bank, according to the FBI news release.
