A Miami-Dade man faced a judge today after being accused of physically abusing his daughter because she would not go to church; the arrest, which took place in Miami Gardens, has sparked conversations about family violence tied to religious practices. Local10 reported that Renel Sanon allegedly entered his daughter’s bedroom yesterday, yanked the covers from her bed, punched her in the chest, and struck her with an electrical cord.
According to the arresting deputies’ report, when they arrived on the scene, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was already providing treatment to the victim, who chose not to give a statement at the time the deputies, which included members from a specialized Mental Health Outreach and Victim Empowerment Squad, took photographs of her injuries and DCF workers were also called to the scene and because the incident occurred at home near Miami Gardens, Sanon was arrested at his residence at 10:55 a.m. yesterday, not long before he was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
