Florida has long been battling against illegal street takeovers. But this weekend, the level of danger experienced by the public and the police protecting it reached another level. An unofficial meet in Margate quickly turned to chaos as it became more and more violent, resulting in a police officer being hospitalized after they were run over. Gunshots were also fired.
Last Sunday, the Margate Police Department responded to reports of a massive street takeover shutting down the 2900 block of Banks Road. They eventually arrived to disperse the crowds and break up the illegal gathering, but the situation was quick to spiral out of control.
According to official police reports, as officers attempted to break up the crowds, a fleeing vehicle struck one of the officers, running over their foot. In response, the officer withdrew his firearm and fired upon the vehicle.
