Tropic Air Rescue: Inside the Helicopter Evacuations Saving Lives Across the Bahamas

Across South Florida, the Bahamas has become what the Hamptons are to New Yorkers, a quick, routine escape just across the Gulf Stream. And with summer just around the corner, that traffic across the water only grows. Travelers can be on a private island by sunset, but when a serious medical emergency strikes, whether it’s a heart attack on a yacht, a stroke on a private island or a diving accident miles from shore, the nearest trauma center is suddenly not so close anymore.

That is exactly what Fort Lauderdale-based Tropic Air Rescue was built for. The company operates the only dedicated helicopter air ambulance service covering the Bahamas, transporting critically ill or injured patients from remote islands, yachts and private homes directly to trauma centers in South Florida. Since launching, the company has completed more than 35 rescues, including nighttime evacuations from private islands and vessels. Notably, the company launched the first rescue helicopter program in the Bahamas in 2024, introducing a capability that had not previously existed in the region.

The service is designed specifically for rapid-response access in destinations where traditional emergency infrastructure is limited or nonexistent, an increasingly relevant consideration as more South Florida travelers, boaters and vacationers spend time in remote areas throughout the Bahamas.
