Ohio man sentenced to nearly four years for illegal firearm possession

FORT MYERS, Florida — Russell Renney, a 51-year-old from Ohio, has been sentenced to three years and ten months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Renney pleaded guilty on December 4, 2025, according to U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe. Court documents reveal that Renney contacted an informant working for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to sell a firearm. During a controlled meeting organized by the ATF, Renney sold the informant a semiautomatic rifle and over 600 rounds of ammunition for $1,400. At the time, Renney had multiple prior felony convictions, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm or ammunition under federal law.
