Lions, tigers and bears make Octagon Wildlife Sanctuary their home

Although surrounded by nature preserves, Babcock Ranch’s wildest neighbors live right across the street at Octagon Wildlife Sanctuary. The 10-acre rural site provides a forever home for an assortment of endearing rescue lions, tigers, bears, hyenas, primates and many more playful and majestic exotic animals. Some are not commonly kept in zoos, and it’s unlikely to see them anywhere else.

Not only can residents book a tour in season at the sanctuary on Horseshoe Road, just across Babcock Ranch Road/State Road 31 from Lake Babcock Drive, but many also volunteer weekly to care for the animals. Tasks range from raking leaves from path- ways and performing gardening chores to cleaning animal enclosures, building and maintaining structures, preparing meals and feeding the animals.
