Three for 3: Birthday cake for the semi-quincentennial

Doc Fords

2500 Island Inn Road, Sanibel – (239)471-8311

With cream cheese icing as thick as mortar, and two luscious layers, the Drunken Parrot Carrot Cake at Doc Fords is a birthday cake even our forefathers would have been proud to pass around the table. Slices of this heavy cake are big enough to share, and served in thick square pieces, with a generous side of whipped cream. This homemade recipe is spiked with a hint of Gosling’s Black Seal rum. It does contain nuts.

The Bubble Room

15001 Captiva Drive, Captiva – (239)471-5558

When the Bubble Room opened in 1979, the dining area had just 34 seats. Both the menus and the recipes were handwritten. The restaurant quickly gained a reputation for delicious entrees and huge chunks of cake. Birthday cake from The Bubble Room has not been around for 250 years, but it has been a part of island life for almost half a century. From the White Christmas Cake, a golden cake made with buttermilk and white chocolate and topped with whipped cream and coconut flakes, to the red velvet cake, which is as red the stripes on America’s flag, cake from the Bubble Room is the perfect exclamation for America’s 250th birthday. There are nine cakes from which to choose, and every slice is shareable!
