Fort Myers, Bonita Beach parking limited as hurricane restoration begins 4 years after Ian

At last, federal funding for hurricane restoration on Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Beach has come through, signaling the go-ahead for massive reconstruction projects.

In a Sept. 2 press release, Lee County announced that several projects to restore beach parks will launch on Sept. 8, right after Labor Day weekend. The announcement follows the Aug. 21 groundbreaking ceremony for the $14.4 million restoration — an expansion — of the Fort Myers Beach pier.

The restoration includes rebuilding boardwalks, parking lots, restrooms and other amenities damaged by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. According to the press release, most projects are expected to take nearly a year to complete…
