Rescuers save dolphin beached on Matlacha sandbar

MATLACHA, Fla.

A roughly 480-pound dolphin stranded on a sandbar in Matlacha on Thursday was rescued and released back into the water after hours of effort by the community, firefighters, and marine biologists.

According to the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District, the dolphin was successfully released and tagged by a marine biologist to monitor its movements. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Marine Mammal Rescue team from Charlotte County was also at the scene…
