A Lee County homeowner filed one form with the state on February 13, 2025, over a house a licensed general contractor had left unfinished. Nine months later she had $26,161.49 of state money, and the same payment knocked the contractor’s license out from under him.

The form was a claim on the Florida Homeowners’ Construction Recovery Fund — not insurance and not a lawsuit, but a state account paid for by licensed contractors’ own fees.
