Drought conditions erased in portions of the Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

For the first time in almost a year, sections across the Gulf Coast are no longer in a drought. The latest drought monitor released on October 1st shows that areas of Lee and Collier Counties have erased drought conditions.

Moderate to severe drought conditions continue for DeSoto and coastal Charlotte Counties, but with recent rains, the trend is our friend. As we approach the end of rainy season, reporting stations like Page Field in Fort Myers are still running rainfall deficits of over a foot.

With a record El Niño taking place over the Pacific, one effect of El Niño during the winter months for the state of Florida is increased rain and the potential for severe weather, which could further erase the drought over the area.
