I won $1m lottery jackpot but took home less than two-thirds due to little known rule – I lost out on even bigger prize

A LOTTERY winner had the opportunity to become a millionaire but only took home two-thirds of the prize after learning about a tax rule.

Carly Cooper, 29, purchased a $50 scratch-off lottery ticket at a 7-Eleven in Fort Meyers, Florida and almost became a millionaire.

However, since she opted for the one-time, lump sum payment, she went home with $640,000 after taxes.

The $1,000,000 A Year For Life Spectacular Scratch-off game includes two top prizes of $1 million a year for life or 134 prizes of $1 million.

One of the $1 million a year for life prizes has already been claimed, according to local NBC News affiliate, WFLA.

The 7-Eleven where Cooper purchased the winning ticket is located at 18781 Three Oaks Parkway in Fort Myers, FL.

The store will be receiving a $2,000 commission for selling the winning ticket.

The U.S. Sun previously reported that Rema Shaban, 47, of St. Augustine, Florida also won the $1,000,000 A Year For Life Spectacular Scratch-off game.
