THE SCENE: All’s fair in food

Looking for a real dining experience? You can always count on the fair. Neon lights and flapping feather flags, the greasy waft of funnel cake and kettle corn, there’s nothing like it.

But there’s another midway full of menus to explore, without the zaniness of fair food, at Sunseeker Resort.

What can we say? Fair food is its own food group, right up there with veggies, meat and dairy, only wilder, foods that only a 3-year-old would dare throw together.

If you go to this year’s Charlotte County Fair, which runs through Sunday, be sure to wear the loose pants. You’ll spend a month’s worth of diet cheat days there and won’t leave the midway the way you went in.

Longtime fair manager Kam Mahshie, no doubt a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy, predicted the usual suspects: “a lobster concession selling various lobster dishes, the wrap shack, jerk chicken, Mexican food and Latin food. Then our regular favorites: barbecue, steak sandwiches, corn dogs, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, French fries, doughnuts, gourmet coffee and Dots ice cream.”
