Case delayed for defendant accused of supplying drugs for fatal overdose

PUNTA GORDA — A pre-trial conference for Lacey Jane Shaver has been delayed until April.

It was originally scheduled for late January.

Shaver, 33, is charged with one count of first-degree murder resulting from distributing illegal narcotics.

The conference is now 9:30 a.m. April 2, at the Charlotte County Justice Center.

The charges against Shaver stem from an overdose death in 2020, where authorities allege she provided the woman with the drugs that later caused her death.

The toxicology from the Medical Examiner recorded samples of amphetamines, methamphetamine, fentanyl and norfentanyl in the 31-year-old woman’s body.

Shaver told deputies at the time that the woman who later died had “begged” to be given the drugs.

Shaver is the first person in Charlotte County to be charged with first-degree murder under the state statute, with State Attorney Amira Fox and Sheriff Bill Prummell highlighting the indictment in 2021.

The case was scheduled for trial in May 2022. The case was delayed by the withdrawal of Shaver’s prior attorney. Public Defender Tony Oonk is now her defense attorney.
