Military Heritage Museum gets amateur radio grant

PUNTA GORDA — The Military Heritage Museum has received a grant to enhance its amateur radio exhibit.

The $61,115 grant was awarded by Amateur Radio Digital Communications, a private foundation that supports amateur radio and digital communication and science technology, according to a news release.

The museum’s grant-funded project, titled “Amateur Radio: Past, Present, and Future,” aims to educate the public about amateur radio’s history in relation to the U.S. military, with an emphasis on the U.S. Army Signal Corps.

“The project scope includes an understanding of the status of amateur radio today, with a goal to connect with visitors interested in learning more about this important part of communication history and its current applications,” the news release states.

The project has three aspects: an interactive mobile exhibit that can be used both inside and outside the museum; eight age-specific lesson plans, including hands-on activities; and communications equipment.

The target audience is students in grades 3-12, as well as museum visitors of all ages.
