PREP ROUNDUP: Port Charlotte spikers devour DeSoto

PORT CHARLOTTE — Despite all that’s been said about Port Charlotte’s Nygeria Hart, the team cannot win with just her alone.

On Thursday against DeSoto County, senior middle hitter Keira Hundley had a big night at the net as the Pirates won in straight sets (25-15, 25-23, 25-21).

Hundley had nine kills and a key block in the third set to aid the victory for Port Charlotte (6-2), which was also helped by a pre-game meeting between the players and coaches about the lack of chemistry on the court the last few matches.

“We talked about our court chemistry and playing for each other and we and our setters had a better connection,” Hundley said. “We just had to work better with each other.”

The setters played well, even using Hart as a decoy with their passes. Hundley cut off a few of those low passes to score kills and points for the Pirates.

Head coach Julie White said that meeting was just what the doctor ordered.

“We talked about how to be better teammates and support each other. It was a good talk and we worked well together,” White said. “I’m glad we shared the ball more. We have good hitters and we’re building confidence in the other girls.”
