UPDATED: Sheriff: Teen, 18, killed when apparently attempting to rob second teen, 17

UPDATED:

PUNTA GORDA – Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said one teenager shot and killed a second teenager during a botched robbery attempt late Saturday.

An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl had invited another 17-year-old boy over to a home along Grapefruit Lane in rural Charlotte County.

“(The 18-year-old) had pulled out a firearm to rob the subject but then the 17-year-old boy pulled out a firearm of his own and fired in – what appears to be – self-defense,” Prummell said in a video on social media.

The Daily Sun is working to confirm the names of the alleged robber, whom Prummell said had recently faced charges in a burglary in which a firearm was stolen. Authorities confirmed the weapon on the scene was the one that had been stolen, but were unable to located when he was arrested in August.

“Units were able to locate the 17-year-old boy and detain him,” Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said in a video posted to social media.

The 17-year-old apparently ditched his weapon while fleeing the scene.
