Charlotte County OK’s deal for West Port expansion land

PORT CHARLOTTE — A West Port expansion may soon be on the horizon.

The Charlotte County Board of Commissioners voted to authorize County Administrator Hector Flores to execute the closing documents for a land transfer for the last portion of Murdock Village.

The 101-acre property was previously purchased by Lost Lagoon Development, LLLP as part of a planned water park.

After that project failed to materialize, Lost Lagoon agreed to transfer the property to Kolter Group Acquisitions, LLC, the developers of West Port.

Company officials said they plans to use the space as an expansion to their existing West Port extension, West Port East.

The transfer led to months of negotiations with the Charlotte County Commission, which retains ownership of Murdock Village lots through the county’s Murdock Village Community Redevelopment Agency.

Commissioners initially expressed skepticism about transferring development rights from one corporate entity to another. Kolter representatives said they would accept similar responsibilities for putting in promised infrastructure and maintaining easements.
