Man charged with buying paint with stolen credit card

PORT CHARLOTTE — Charlotte County deputies arrested a man Wednesday for allegedly buying paint with a stolen credit card, before reselling it at a lower price.

Nelson Giovani Hernandez Gonzalez, 28, is charged with one count each of dealing in stolen property and grand theft.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell highlighted the arrest in a Friday news release in order to draw attention to scams targeting construction supply stores.

“We know the scammers are out there and waiting to take advantage of people in their desperation,” he stated. “What I want Charlotte County to know is that we are watching and we are stopping these scams as we find them.”

Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Gonzalez, a Lehigh Acres resident, after he bought $4,746.31 in paint supplies from a Sherwin Williams store in Port Charlotte.

The payment was made through a business charge account, according to investigators.

“It was found that Gonzalez was fraudulently using the business charge account and reselling the paint to other contractors at a lower cost,” the news release stated.
