VOLLEYBALL: Panthers nip Tarpons for Gorman title

PUNTA GORDA — The Gene Gorman Invitational volleyball tournament came down to a ball that hung precariously on the net.

Unfortunately, for the Charlotte volleyball team, the ball fell on their side.

Bradenton Christian got that one lucky break it needed to win a thrilling third set to win the championship from the Tarpons 25-18, 21-25, 22-20 Saturday at the Wally Keller Gymnasium.

It was a weekend filled with great volleyball from some of the area’s finest teams and featured a history-making milestone for one of the area’s top coaches.

Bradenton Christian’s Faith Allen, who had 14 kills in the championship game, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and a $1,500 scholarship was awarded to her school’s scholarship fund in her name.

Freshman Addelyn Vanduinen, who had eight kills, nine aces and 29 assists against Charlotte, joined her teammate on the All-Tournament team.

Also on the team were Keira Vasquez of Charlotte, Courtney Parrish of Riverview and Sydney Mullen of Sarasota.
