What Happened To The New “Storm Proof” Homes During Hurricane Milton?

You don’t have to live where hurricanes hit to know that this year’s hurricane season has been particularly rough. Between Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, millions of folks have found themselves without a place to live . But the struggle of living in areas affected by hurricanes are nothing new. That’s why there are folks trying to come up with solutions to make dealing with these dangerous storms easier.

One way is with hurricane-proof houses, as impossible as this may sound. In fact, there are already two communities in Florida that are proving to be quite a success. There is Babcock Ranch near Fort Myers and Hunters Point in Cortez. Both are solar-powered and made to withstand powerful winds, including those often found in hurricanes. As you might imagine, a lot of thought goes into creating a hurricane-proof house. Both strong winds and flooding have to be taken into account. Luckily, with power transmission lines underground and wetlands to collect water, these communities were in good shape for Helene and Milton. In fact, both communities made it out with little to no damage!
