While investigating a fatal shooting, finding a vehicle they think is involved, Fort Myers Police arrested a Lehigh Acres man on drug and robbery charges.
Robert Lawrence, 45, faces charges of possession of a controlled substance without prescription; drug possession; and robbery with a firearm. Fort Myers police apprehended him at his Lehigh Acres home Monday when they impounded the SUV suspected in a Sunday shooting in Fort Myers.
According to an arrest affidavit from Fort Myers police, officers had responded to Colonial Boulevard, near Ortiz Avenue, after another driver reported she was involved in a crash around 6:50 p.m. Sunday with Lawrence, citing “erratic driving.”
After the impact, the witness reported she saw smoke stemming from the collision and the victim, whose identity is redacted, stumbling from the SUV, holding his chest.
The witness told authorities she thought the victim was hurt from the crash. When her husband and son approached the victim, she said, a man, later identified as Lawrence, “jumped into” the driver’s seat and drove onto the sidewalk, nearly hitting the victim.
