CCSO: Man threatened deputy with a knife

PORT CHARLOTTE — A man was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly threatened a Charlotte County deputy with a knife outside Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor.

The man eventually surrendered and threw down his knife, according to authorities, with no injuries reported from the encounter.

Bennie Mitchel Carroll, 61, is now facing charges of aggravated assault against an officer and resisting arrest with violence.

According to Carroll’s arrest report, deputies with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office saw him around 9:12 p.m. walking in the median near 5500 Sunseeker Way.

One responding deputy made a U-turn to approach him and allegedly found him sitting in the median before standing up to walk across Tamiami Trail.

Carroll repeatedly walked onto the median and into the road as the deputy tried to speak with him. Eventually, he told the deputy: “I’m not stopping.”

When the deputy turned on his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and got out of his patrol vehicle, Carroll allegedly pulled a knife out of his pocket and ran south on Tamiami Trail, toward the U.S. 41 bridge.
