Deputies make quick arrest of man they say stabbed sleeping woman

Deputies found a man they believe broke into a Tice woman’s home, stabbing and hitting her while she was sleeping early Sunday.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an incident on New York Drive. They did not release a time. Deputies found a woman with multiple stab wounds and began treating her while a drone unit and deputies began a search for the assailant.

Drone operator Justin McDonald located the suspect one street away with the weapon, the sheriff’s Facebook post reported. Deputies detained the suspect, Bonnier Jose Sarmiento Lanza, 33, of Fort Myers without incident.

Detectives said Lanza broke into the victim’s home and began hitting and stabbing her multiple times while she was sleeping. He also hit another person inside the home. They said the victim and suspect know each other.

Lanza is charged with two counts of burglary with battery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He remained in Lee County Jail on Sunday afternoon with no bond set. He’s due in court on Dec. 30.
