PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida — A Port Charlotte man was arrested after allegedly selling methamphetamine to undercover detectives in a county park, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.On November 18, 2024, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from a concerned citizen about suspected drug dealing in Franz Ross Park. The Narcotics Unit initiated an investigation, leading to two undercover purchases of methamphetamine from Hubert William Coggins Jr., a 28-year-old resident of Port Charlotte, Florida. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine, totaling 3 grams, stated the source.On November 25, deputies apprehended Coggins at a gas station. A K9 unit alerted officers to narcotics in his vehicle, where a search revealed a smoking pipe and a plastic baggie containing 8.4 grams of methamphetamine. Sheriff Bill Prummell expressed gratitude to the citizen who provided the tip, stating, “I have been very clear that I will not tolerate drug dealing in my county, and to find it happening in a park where children play is nothing short of despicable.”Coggins faces multiple charges, including two counts of selling methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a county park, possession with intent to sell within the same proximity, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He is held at the Charlotte County Jail with a bond set at $132,000.
