Punta Gorda city manager hiring process delayed

PUNTA GORDA — Punta Gorda City Council bit off a bit more than it could chew at the Dec. 4 meeting, which yielded an agenda with 605 pages of backup.

They couldn’t fit all of the items into one meeting.

One of the subjects they pushed to the next meeting was the process on how to select the next city manager. Without it, the council couldn’t move forward in picking a firm to help choose the next city leader.

City Manager Greg Murray resigned in November, shortly after three new council members were elected.

The current council members say they are satisfied with the job Melissa Reichert is doing as acting city manager. She has been in charge since Murray resigned.

Reichert recently helped navigate the public involvement in the Night the Light tree ceremony after Hurricane Milton destroyed most of the decorations. More than $25,000 was raised in less than a month by the community and local businesses to ensure the event was celebrated in downtown Punta Gorda.

She also helped with a community cleanup at Gilchrist Park so it could be open in time for the holidays.
