DEVELOPMENT REVIEW: Salty Tarpon gets OK from Punta Gorda committee

PUNTA GORDA — Punta Gorda’s Development Review Committee reviewed and approved, with conditions, an application for outdoor dining at The Salty Tarpon.

It’s a planned 120-seat indoor and outdoor restaurant, 408 Tamiami Trail in downtown Punta Gorda, adjacent to the Ice House Pub, and the former home of Manatee’s Pizza.

Owner Charley Johnson, who was with the Belgian Monk a few blocks away, previously told Daily Sun columnist Sue Wade that he had expected to open in September.

In The Salty Tarpon application, the city’s senior engineer Bryan Clemons noted, the owner made improvements “beyond those requested in their outdoor dining application.”

Furthermore, they added improvements in the city’s right of way, which are not approved by the Public Works Department.

The committee voted to have those improvements for more seating be removed to ensure that everything is restored to “pre‐construction conditions.”

In preparation for The Salty Tarpon’s upcoming opening, the owners launched a Facebook page with a proposed menu.
