New Orleans attack: 2 Florida women among the nearly 3 dozen injured

NEW ORLEANS, La. (WFLA) — Two Fort Myers women were among those injured after a man drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street on New Year’s Day, according to reports by NBC affiliate WESH.

Elle Eisele and Steele Idelson, both age 19, were taken to a hospital for treatment after the incident, which is being investigated by the FBI as a terrorist attack.

As of Thursday, Jan. 2, both women were being treated in the trauma ICU, and Idelson was set to undergo surgery, WESH reported.

New Year’s celebrations were just wrapping up in New Orleans’ French Quarter district when the attack took place.

Police said the suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar from Texas, slammed into the crowd at 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, while driving a rented pickup truck.

Jabbar then opened fire on police, injuring two officers, according to reports. He was later killed by law enforcement at the scene.

In total, at least 15 people were killed and 35 were injured.
