PORT CHARLOTTE — Deputies arrested a man on for allegedly selling a stolen vehicle.
Authorities said that the suspect had sold a vehicle he was only allowed to borrow, which the buyer only discovered when he ran the Vehicle Identification Number, according to reports released Friday by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
Robert Davidson, 53, has been charged with one count each of dealing in stolen property, obtaining property by scheme to defraud, and perjury by signing a false affidavit.
Deputies with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office were alerted to an improper vehicle sale on Dec. 30, reports show.
The buyer said that he runs a business which purchases “junk cars” to salvage or restore.
He had recently bought a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado from Davidson, who claimed to have lost the vehicle title, according to reports. However, he still signed documents provided by the buyer to declare ownership and transfer it through the sale.
When the buyer arrived to a local Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles office to register the vehicle, he learned that the vehicle was not registered to Davidson.
