Luis Alvarez, 31, hailed as a hero for helping save a 9-year-old girl during a shark attack in Florida, is now in ICE custody and facing possible deportation—just days after his act of bravery.
Alvarez was one of several men who rushed to aid young Leah Lendel after she was attacked by a suspected bull shark while snorkeling near the shore in Boca Grande on June 9. Witnesses say Alvarez dove into the water without hesitation, attempting to scare off the shark and rescue the girl, whose hand was partially severed in the attack.
“He went deep underwater, not even caring about the shark,” said Raynel Lugo, another good Samaritan who helped. “He probably faced the shark.”…
