Overdose deaths down, but homicides are up

PORT CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte County Medical Examiner investigated 43 overdose deaths last year.

That’s down down from 51 in 2022 and 49 in 2023.

Of those deaths, fentanyl was the highest cause followed by methamphetamines, then cocaine. Heroin use was the lowest cause of overdose deaths reported from 2016 to 2024. There were high numbers of deaths in 2020-21 and fentanyl deaths were up until last year…
