Meet Bruce; a five-year-old German shepherd who had to have his ears removed because of chronic infections after having been a victim of severe animal cruelty and neglect.
In Port Charlotte, Florida, Bruce had been discovered by animal control officers from Charlotte County Animal Control back in February. A Good Samaritan had reported an emaciated German shepherd who was nearly bald and covered in open infected sores. When the officers spotted Bruce, they immediately removed him from his abusive home and transported him to a veterinary hospital for emergency care and treatment.
After his condition was stabilized, Bruce was brought to the Animal Welfare League, and although he suffered terribly in the past, Bruce was always gentle and forgiving as he slowly healed.
But Bruce’s true transformation began when Lisa, one of our amazing volunteers, stepped up to foster him. Lisa opened her heart and home to Bruce, helping him discover joy, security, and trust all over again. From there, Bruce was transferred to Dr. Alley’s Medical Clinic where he underwent the necessary surgery to remove his severely infected ears. Under Lisa’s loving care, Bruce blossomed during recovery, his tail now wags freely, and his eyes sparkle with hope and happiness.
It had been repeated vet visits, medications and treatments – all helping Bruce on the long journey he underwent to regain his health. He was treated with countless ear medications, baths and oral meds, however the chronic infections never would heal. The only way to bring Bruce back to health was to remove his ears.
Dr. Ferguson surgically removed his ear canals, as well as the outside of his ears, because they were so severely infected that they were never going to heal.
Bruce continues to thrive, and even though he doesn’t have ears, he’s a wonderful dog…
