PORT CHARLOTTE — Although there’s a well-maintained shrine in memory of Charlotte County Sgt. Elio Diaz who was killed in the line of duty in December 2024, the Charlotte County Commission could soon designate a memorial highway in his honor.
At the 9 a.m. meeting Tuesday, the Charlotte County Commission will consider a resolution to designate a segment of U.S. 41 between Melbourne Street and Church Street in Charlotte Harbor as “Sergeant Elio Diaz Memorial Highway.”
“This dedication means so much, as it represents a community that vows to never forget our brother,” Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell stated in a news release. “Here at CCSO, we still hear Elio’s laugh in the halls of our buildings and see his smile everywhere we go. I pray that Charlotte County remembers him as we do, and that those memories remind us all how much he loved serving his community. Elio will never be forgotten, and this stretch of highway – honoring him where he made the ultimate sacrifice – helps to ensure that.”…
