Florida man charged with conning hurricane survivors in $100K cabinet scheme

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — In a multi-state investigation, a Florida man was arrested and charged with money laundering and a fraud scheme after getting paid to build cabinets post-Hurricane Ian, and never doing the work.

According to the Gulf Coast News, Christopher Kane, 59, allegedly entered into contracts with multiple Florida residents to make cabinets following Hurricane Ian, from January 23 to May 2023. According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Kane collected large payments for his work, but then never provided materials or completed any jobs, stealing more than $100,000.

Authorities worked together and tracked Kane across state lines. He was arrested in Pennsylvania and extradited to Lee County…
