Fort Myers’ new pocket park brings nature to downtown

A vacant lot in Downtown Fort Myers has taken on a new life as the city’s first-ever pocket park. Nestled in between the Franklin Shops lives the pocket park, located at 2208 First St. The park, named “Common Ground,” is the Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency(CRA)’s latest public work investment into the neighborhood.

A pocket park is a type of miniature park that is no more than an acre. The Common Ground pocket park was opened up in August with tables and chairs, a water fountain with a pet bowl station and space for multi-purpose use for special events or temporary vendors added.

The location of the park was an empty lot after the demolition of a historic building, leaving an empty gap by the Franklin Shops. The building originally was a historic home from the 1900s. Due to a termite infestation in 2019, the building had to be demolished…
