Florida officials push for stricter commercial driver standards

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (WWSB) — Attorney General Ashley Moody joined U.S. Rep. Greg Steube and Florida Highway Patrol Col. Gary Howze at the northbound Punta Gorda Weigh Station on Monday to urge swift passage of the Safer Truckers Act.

The proposal would tighten commercial driver’s license standards and improve highway safety, the officials said. They framed the plan as a response to recent fatal crashes in Florida and other states.

The bill would add two federal requirements for CDL applicants: lawful presence in the U.S. and basic English proficiency so drivers can read and understand road signs, Moody said.
