Drought drums down Southwest Florida; some businesses flourish in it

RUSKIN — While Southwest Florida escaped hurricanes, the lack of rain this year has thrown the area into another type of natural disaster: drought.

After the area recorded a 13-inch rainfall deficit compared to the historical average 12-month total, the Southwest Florida Water District voted to restrict water usage in November to counties, including Sarasota, DeSoto and parts of Charlotte.
