Charlotte CARE Center Extends Hours to Shelter Southwest Florida Residents from Record Cold Front

A significant cold front, one of the coldest in 15 years, is affecting Southwest Florida, the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay reports. The Charlotte CARE Center, formerly the Charlotte County Homeless Coalition, will extend its hours from yesterday to tomorrow to provide shelter for those in need.

According to the Charlotte County website, the Charlotte CARE Center at 1476 Kenesaw St., Port Charlotte, will provide shelter during the cold. With the updated NWS forecast, Monday night is included. Pre-registration is required by calling 941-627-4313, and residents should arrive before 8 p.m.

Charlotte County west of I-75 is under a Cold Weather Advisory, with wind chills possibly reaching 25°F or lower. East of I-75, an Extreme Cold/Freeze Warning is in effect, with wind chills near 20°F and winds of 20–40 mph, gusting up to 50 mph. Coastal areas face a Gale Warning with winds of 30–40 knots, gusting to 45 knots, along with a High Surf Advisory and a high risk of rip currents, with waves of 5–7 feet, according to the National Weather Service…
