Cape Coral police target distracted driving in citywide operation

CAPE CORAL, Florida — The Cape Coral Police Department conducted a citywide traffic saturation operation on March 13, 2026, specifically targeting distracted driving.

The operation, which took place from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., resulted in 91 total traffic stops and 90 citations, according to a press release from the department. Officers issued 42 citations for distracted driving, 30 for speeding, and 22 for violating traffic control or signal devices. Additionally, there were 73 moving citations and 17 non-moving citations.

The operation was funded by a sub-grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Cape Coral ranks fourth out of 38 agencies in Florida for distracted driving-related traffic fatalities and serious injuries, according to the Highway Safety Matrix.
