LIST: Cooling stations now available in Fort Wayne, city shares

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The City of Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing and Neighborhood Services has shared details about cooling stations that are now open to anyone looking to escape the heat.

21Alive First Alert Meteorologists have issued First Alert Weather Days for Wednesday and Thursday as the heat index is expected to reach about 100 degrees. During those days, you should plan to limit time outdoors, especially for those more susceptible to the heat.

Starting Monday, June 8, the following cooling stations will be open to the public through September 1:

  • Allen County Public Library Main Branch, 900 Library Plaza
  • Open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday noon-5 p.m. Closed July 4.
  • Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St.
  • Open Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday/Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Sunday noon-4 p.m.
  • Citilink, Central Station, 121 W. Baker St., individuals may purchase a fare and ride one full trip on a route to cool off.
  • Available Monday-Friday 5:25 a.m.-9:45 p.m., Saturday 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Closed July 4.
  • Inasmuch Ministry, 930 Broadway,
  • Open Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m.- noon, Monday evening 4 p.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday-Friday, 4-7 p.m., only when the temperature is 90 degrees or more.
  • The Rescue Mission, 404 E. Washington Blvd.,
  • Open seven days a week from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. regardless of temperature.
  • Meals are offered at 7 a.m., noon, and 5 p.m.
  • The Salvation Army, 2901 N. Clinton St.,
  • Open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed July 4.

The city says the Office of Housing and Neighborhood Services and the Planning Council on Homelessness will continue to look for other community partners to offer cooling shelters in the evenings…
