Fort Wayne insurance fund gets $10M bailout from council, self-insuring questions continue

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — For years, the City of Fort Wayne has been self-insured. Each year, it sets aside money to cover health expenses and lawsuits, and when expenses arise, Fort Wayne writes a check from its own bank account instead of relying on insurance.

“What we do is we self-insure, so we handle all the medical claims, whatever happens, the city pays for it out of pocket, said 2nd District Councilman (R) Nathan Hartman.

The problem is that this system has become expensive over the last two years. So expensive that on Tuesday, the city administration had to ask the council for a $10 million bailout to ensure that their set-aside insurance money would remain sufficient to cover costs.
