One Tank Trip – Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) – It’s Indiana’s most famous sandwich, and it was invented more than 100 years ago in a town off of U.S. 24.

The breaded tenderloin originated in Huntington. Nick Freienstein is credited with the invention. He started by selling sandwiches from a cart at the courthouse square. Taking inspiration from his German roots, Freienstein created his take on the Viennese Wiener schnitzel. In 1908, Freienstein opened Nick’s Kitchen on North Jefferson Street in downtown Huntington. The restaurant still stands in the same building, 118 years later.
