ELKHART, Ind. — The National New York Central Railroad Museum and Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS) will host a public farewell celebration for New York Central 4-8-2 No. 3001 on Sept. 4-5. The event will officially conclude the Mohawk’s long-time residency in Elkhart, while also celebrating the beginning of its next chapter: restoration to operation.
Officials from both the museum and society will deliver brief remarks at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 4 as part of the celebration. The remaining two days will include special photo opportunities and commemorative souvenir items for attendees, according to the event page on Facebook.
The Fort Wayne organization, which retained ownership of No. 3001, has been working with HZRX-Locomotive Leasing to prepare the locomotive for its deadhead move to the society’s restoration facility in New Haven, Ind.
