Strike averted at Fort Wayne Assembly; agreement reached between UAW Local 2209 and General Motors

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A strike involving UAW workers at the General Motors plant in southwest Allen County that makes full-size pickup trucks has been averted.

UAW Local 2209 announced Monday that it has reached an agreement with GM management regarding a dispute over the work duties of both union and management staff at Fort Wayne Assembly.

Back on October 29, Local 2209 authorized a strike following overwhelming support by membership during a vote.

Local 2209 Shop Chairman Rich LeTourneau initially threatened a strike early in October over the use of senior staffers to fill holes in second and third shifts that were vacated by temporary workers who were let go by GM. The union and GM had been trying to reach an agreement regarding the employment of those 250 workers. At the time, GM said it had no choice but to terminate the workers because of provisions in the contract.

GM had said the union had no “practical or legal basis for a strike at Fort Wayne Assembly.”

In a Bargaining Report posted to the Local 2209 website, an agreement was reached on November 7, after meetings between GM and union negotiators.
