Woman who admitted to neglecting kids, leaving them bruised, avoids prison

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A Fort Wayne woman convicted of multiple counts of felony neglect in a case where three children under her care suffered bruising all over their bodies will serve a year in the Allen County Community Corrections.

An Allen Superior Court judge sentenced Elicia Hurmon to five years in prison Thursday but suspended four of those years and ordered the one executed year of her sentence to be served in the community corrections electronic monitoring program, according to court records.

Hurmon, 36, had been accused of using a belt and her hand to beat children in her care, according to court documents. One of the children in her care, a 4-month-old, suffered “significant” bruising to her legs.

The sentence came after Hurmon accepted a plea deal with prosecutors where she pleaded guilty to three Level 5 felony counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury. Two felony counts of domestic battery to someone younger than 14 were dropped as part of the deal.
