House fire in Huntington County claims the lives of 8 animals

BIPPUS, Ind. (WANE)— A family in Huntington County is picking up the pieces after a New Year’s Eve fire destroyed their home.

Richard and Tammy Tate had lived in their Bippus home for 25 years when the inside was engulfed in flames. The two-story brick building still stands. Evidence of the fire can be seen in the boarded-up windows and the charred remnants of what was once the Tate’s possessions littering the sidewalk outside the home. The couple was not inside when the fire started but their 13 pets were.

“When we opened the front door it was like instantly from a grey smoke to a black smoke and we could not see or breathe,” said Tammy Tate tearfully.

Richard was disabled 23 years ago after falling off of a roof, three months ago he was in a vehicle accident. Despite this, he went into the burning building to try to save the family’s beloved pets. 5 cats, 2 dogs, and 1 bird did not make it.
