Fort Wayne hopes streetlights improve safety in neighborhoods

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— Fort Wayne’s Community Development Division has installed new streetlights along several main roads south of downtown.

They hope to continue installing lighting over the next year. Phase one of the installation included adding lights in the Broad River neighborhood on S. Calhoun St. near Bishop Luers High School. Phase two included installations along Fairfield Ave. south of Rudisill Blvd. The city hopes to add more lights further south on Fairfield, and also near Packard Park.

These streetlighting projects are a part of the Packard 2030 Plan . Input from residents had a lot of specific requests to improve lighting and pedestrian safety in the area, according to the Head of the Department of Neighborhoods, Dan Baisden.

“What people wanted to see in the neighborhood,” Baisden said. “They wanted to feel safer maybe walking to school in the morning or getting to the library or leaving the library after hours.”…
