Monitoring severe risk Sunday, First Alert Weather Day in effect

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The Storm Prediction Center (a branch of NOAA) has issued an enhanced severe risk, or level 3 out of 5, for not just the entire area, but very the entire state! Between this, and some growing signs conditions may be more favorable for severe weather than earlier modeled, a FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY is in effect for the second half of the day Sunday.

We’ll address that risk in greater detail in a moment, but since we had some thunderstorms around today I wanted to make sure I mentioned that the rest of the evening and night looks quiet outside of some breezy conditions – lows will stay in the upper 50s to low 60s under partly to mostly cloudy skies.

Saturday looks mainly dry before noon with showers likely after that time. Even so, I wouldn’t cancel any plans over them! The thunderstorm risk is low – just keep the umbrella handy as you may need it intermittently. Highs will likely return to the 70s.

When it comes to severe weather forecasting, I tend to be pretty conservative – a lot has to go “right” for all the dynamics to come together (especially around here!), but certain parameters that looked underwhelming since the beginning of the week are at least beginning to come together enough to warrant a closer look…
