Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control warns of scammer targeting owners of lost pets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control (FWACC) is warning pet owners of a scam going around in which the caller claims the owner’s lost pet has been hit by a car.

The scammer is able to mask the phone number they are calling from, with the caller ID showing the shelter number, making them appear legitimate, according to a Facebook post Tuesday from the animal shelter. The caller claims they are with FWACC and tells the pet owner they need payment information in order to provide emergency surgery for the pet.

“We do not ask for deposits for emergency medical care to be paid over the phone or via a link,” FWACC said in the post. “We are not a full service veterinary facility and would generally not be offering anything like this to the public.”…
