Gov. Braun signs executive order aimed at removing tax ‘marriage penalties’

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Gov. Mike Braun on Monday announced the signing of an executive order aimed at removing what he called “marriage penalties.”

In a statement April 14, Braun’s office said the state’s tax system “disadvantages married couples in many ways,” including exemption caps that are the same for both single and married filing jointly taxpayers.

The governor said an initial review found multiple tax polices that “may be disincentivizing marriage,” citing an example in which a single filer can deduct up to $3,000 in rent, but that amount doesn’t change for a married couple filing jointly…
